“You c
an never go wrong with a little pink. A lot works for me” - Dana Dalgetty
I don’t know if you noticed but when I am patrolling pretty much everything that I wear that could be pink, is. And so people all the time ask me, “Sarah, what’s with all the pink?”
Pink is not my favorite color, but pink is the most powerful color to me. Here’s why:
1.) when I see something that is normally black or white, like mittens or trauma sheers, in pink, I can’t help but smile. It makes me happy to see something that normally gets overlooked instead in a vibrant, loud color.
2.) for me, the clothes that I wear are a reflection of who I am as a person. When I wear my uniform a lot of my individualism gets lost and so by having my pink accessories I can be myself while still being a member of the patrol team I am so proud to be on.
3.) I get to own my femininity. In a male dominated industry, I get to proudly and clearly announce that I am a girly pink “Bubblegum Princess”
4.) when little girls see me, and that I have the same color helmet as them, or that I have a flowery neckie that matches theirs, or when they see my “ski like a girl” sticker it is a message to them that being a girl is fucking awesome and that you don’t have to do things exactly like the boys to be amazing.
5.) it allows me to be different. Because let’s face it, I’m not like a lot of the other patrollers. I love the jobs that make a lot of people grumble. I think there’s nothing more fun than helping a scared or lost kid calm down and smile again. I love standing at the top of the mountain and helping people find the best run to go down. I love teaching people about avalanche dangers and why certain areas are closed. I love standing at slow signs and being the first person to pick up a guests ski when they fall down, even if they aren’t hurt. And I love all the other aspects of my job too. I love being a ski patroller, and I will continue to be the pinkest, glitteriest, happiest ski patrol on the mountain. 💖💖💖
