If you are a ski racing fan there is quite possibly no better opportunity to see your favorite athletes in action than at the Birds of Prey World Cup Ski Race held at Beaver Creek Mountain in Colorado. This is the only men’s World Cup ski race held in the United States, making this a unique opportunity for US Athletes to get up close and personal with their fans, and they seize this opportunity.
Because the crowd for the US Race is significantly smaller than what the athletes are used to in the European venues, they are much more interactive and engaged with their fans individually. This allows you to shake the athletes hands, take selfies with them, or in my case, awkwardly stare completely starstruck while they uncomfortably walk away.
Not only are the athletes super accessible, but the energy of the crowd is absolutely unreal. Fans come from all around the world to cheer for their favorite athletes, wave their countries flag, and ring their cowbells. They are absolutely stoked to be there, and honestly I was too.
Beaver creek is an absolutely gorgeous venue, the race course is incredible, and this is a rare opportunity to not only see olympians in action, but to congratulate them in person afterwards. If you have young ski racers, or are a young ski racer at heart, I cannot recommend this trip more.
Pro Tips:
Park in the Elk Lot, and then take the bus up for a cheap and minimal stress option
Bring a spare bag for the swag that they pass out
If you are a super fan, bring something to collect autographs
For an aerial view of the course, you can take the chairlift without your skis on
